How community building helps make us great

Matter of Principal Video Link:

I was searching for a certain document on the FFCA website and a link to the High School's twitter feed appeared in the results. I could not resist. I clicked on it and scrolled through all the posts that we have made in the first month of school: orientation, LINK Crew, physical education pictures, world religion class, School Council BBQ, outdoor education, sciences classes, Gr 12 pancake brunch, Beauty and the Beast rehearsals, grade 10 hike, fine arts displays and admin "Snack and Chat'. I was speaking with a colleague of mine later about all the great things happening at the high school, and after I was finished bragging, they asked me a very important question. "Do all these things actually make us an amazing school?'

That is great question and to be honest I had to stop and think about it for a second. This is the answer I gave them.

These events and celebrations do not in themselves make us a great, but they are just one piece of the puzzle that creates the picture of an amazing school. One of the correlates of a great school is celebrations and community building. At FFCA HS we spend a substantial amount of energy and time organizing these events to help us create an environment that is safe for students to learn in. Creating a sense of community, through our Twitter feed, or through the events themselves give students the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves, to feel like they are a part of a family. We also get great academic results, have a K-12 character curriculum, encourage and support professional growth in our staff and employ many other programs and initiatives that are also a part of the equation that creates a thriving high school.

In the near future we have events planned that will continue to build the community within our high school. All of these things are a part of what makes us a great school, and your support from home is an important part of that.
